Food for the brain

With increasing competition in all walks of life, everyone wants to become more intelligent. Most of us feel that our brain is not working to its full capacity. There are many medicines, supplements and dietary regimes that promise just that. The veracity of these claims is however a million dollar question.

Well some food stuffs contain the things that help brainsgrow. The fish oils that are found in fatty fish - tuna, sardines and mackerel - are the best natural source of a type of fat that is needed for normal brain development of a child during pregnancy and soon after whilst still breastfeeding.

Normally there isn't much danger of a child going short, but research has shown that if pregnancies are very close together then the mother's natural supply of these essential fatty acids can fall dangerously low. This is an issue in the developing world where babies can indeed go short of this brain developing nutrient.

It's also true that we need food for our brains to work. Ideally we need a decent balance of foods because our brain makes use of different foods for it's work. First of all, just like a baby's, an adult's brain needs fatty acids to work properly. The brain also takes Amino Acids from proteins and makes the neurotransmitters so brain cells can communicate with one another. It uses carbohydrates as fuel, extracting the glucose they contain. And it takes the micronutrients that are found in fruits & vegetables to make antioxidants to protect brain cells from damage.
